What is a Mil?
Most all of our plastic bags, plastic sheeting and poly tubing product description contains the "mil" thickness. Many packaging professionals have used the term "mil" as an industry standard to describe the thickness of plastic bags or tubing, but it is not a familiar term to many new buyers. That is why we have broken it down in better terms in hopes this gives you a better idea of a "mil". The term "mil" is used to describe thickness in thousandths of an inch. In other words, "1 mil" is one thousandth of an inch, 2.5 mil is two and a half thousandths of an inch. You can write mil thickness numerically. You can write 2 mil as ".002" or 1 1/4 mil as ".00125”.

How to determine thickness of a mil?
It can be difficult to visualize a very thin measurement if you are not familiar with its touch and feel. You can get a good idea of particular gauge (another word commonly used for thickness) by looking at your household items you may have on hand, such as plastic zipper bags or plastic sandwich bags. They are typically 1.5 to 2 mil thick.
